Crane and lifting equipment inspection in New South Wales

Crane, EWP, telehandler, forklift and lifting gear inspections to the AS 2550, AS 1418, AS 2359 and AS 4991 series. New South Wales, with the state regulator, mining framework and site mobilisation requirements in view.

NSW mine lifting equipment must work within the site safety management system and the control measures for mobile plant, lifting operations and principal hazards. Annual and major inspections are technical evidence, but the mine still needs coherent log books, registration records, operator controls and defect close-out.

We inspect cranes, EWPs, telehandlers, forklifts and lifting gear across NSW coal and non-coal operations. The report uses the relevant AS 2550, AS 1418, AS 2359 and lifting gear standard, while documenting any NSW MDG guidance or site rule that shaped the scope.

New South Wales requirements

Regulator
The NSW Resources Regulator oversees mine safety. SafeWork NSW administers general WHS plant registration, high-risk work and workplace requirements that can apply alongside the mine framework.
Mining regulations
The WHS (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 and the mine safety management system govern lifting plant at NSW mines. NSW MDG guidance is used where it provides a relevant control for mobile plant, fluid power, lifting operations or mine access and maintenance.
Registration and notification
Design and item registration for prescribed high-risk plant is handled through the NSW general WHS pathway, while mine introduction, notification and acceptance are controlled by the mine safety management system. A current registration or certificate does not remove the need for the site lifting register and log book.
Mobilisation
NSW coal mine visits are arranged around Hunter Valley or regional induction, isolation and the site’s lifting plan. Major inspections are pre-planned for access, strip-down, NDT, load testing and engineering review so the inspection record can be completed during the approved outage.

State-specific inspection focus

Mine safety management system
The inspection record is tied to the NSW site’s lifting plan, plant register, log book and principal hazard controls.
MDG-informed controls
Relevant NSW MDG guidance is recorded as the basis for checks on mobile plant interaction, hydraulics, access or maintenance rather than being presented as a generic certificate.
Registration and acceptance
General high-risk plant registration, mine acceptance and operator or site competency evidence are checked as separate controls.
Lifting gear traceability
Each sling, shackle, hook, beam or spreader is checked for identification, condition, discard criteria and register status.

Inspection checkpoints

  • The NSW mine’s lifting plan, safety management system, register and principal hazard controls are reviewed before inspection.
  • High-risk plant registration, annual or major inspection evidence, log books and site acceptance records are reconciled.
  • Crane or EWP structure, safety devices, hooks, ropes, load charts and controls are examined against the relevant standard.
  • Defects and release conditions are recorded so the mine can make its own documented decision on continued use.

Frequently asked questions

Does NSW plant registration replace mine acceptance?

No. General plant registration and the mine’s own introduction, lifting plan and defect controls are separate requirements. The inspection report helps the site reconcile the evidence.

Which NSW MDG documents apply to crane inspections?

It depends on the equipment and mine. We identify relevant MDG guidance in the scope, then apply the equipment-specific AS 2550 or AS 1418 requirements for the actual inspection.

Can you perform major inspections at Hunter Valley mines?

Yes. We can plan major inspection access, strip-down, NDT, load testing and engineering review around the site’s outage and induction requirements.
