Queensland mine NDT needs to produce evidence that the Site Senior Executive and responsible engineering personnel can use within the safety and health management system. The correct method depends on the material, defect type, access and acceptance criteria — not simply the state in which the mine operates.
Mining Inspection Australia provides MT, UT, PT, PAUT and thickness measurement for coal, mineral and quarry operations across Queensland. We record the inspection method, calibration, indication sizing and engineering escalation path so the result can be used in the site’s defect and repair process.
Queensland requirements
- Regulator
- RSHQ regulates Queensland mining and quarrying safety. WorkSafe Queensland administers general WHS and plant requirements that may apply to pressure equipment, fixed plant and workplaces outside the mining-specific pathway.
- Mining regulations
- CMSHR 2017 and MQSHR 2017 place risk management, competency and safety and health management systems at the centre of Queensland mine control. NDT findings are therefore reported with the site’s responsible person, repair approval and return-to-service process in view.
- Registration and notification
- NDT personnel and methods must be appropriate to the task, but the method itself is not a blanket plant registration category. The inspected asset may have separate pressure equipment, high-risk plant, site acceptance or notification records that must be reconciled before release.
- Mobilisation
- Queensland coal and mineral sites are planned differently: coal work is coordinated with the SHMS, underground or surface access and shift controls, while quarry and mineral work is scoped around safe access, cleaning and isolation. Remote locations are supplied with the agreed method and calibration equipment.
State-specific inspection focus
- Coal mine structural evidence
- NDT findings are linked to the coal operation’s SHMS, repair approval and SSE release process.
- Mineral and quarry structures
- Fixed plant, bins, chutes, conveyors and mobile equipment are assessed against the site risk system and applicable Australian Standards.
- Pressure equipment
- Thickness and weld inspection is coordinated with AS/NZS 3788 records and the responsible person for the vessel or system.
- Indication escalation
- The report defines when an indication is acceptable, requires monitoring, needs repair or must be referred for engineering assessment.

Inspection checkpoints
- The coal, mineral or quarry context and the responsible site engineering or SSE contact are confirmed.
- Method, surface preparation, calibration and acceptance criteria are documented before testing begins.
- Indications are sized and mapped, with repair, monitoring or engineering escalation stated in the report.
- The final NDT record can be attached to the Queensland site defect register, repair approval and return-to-service decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can you perform NDT during a Queensland mine outage?
Yes. We plan access, cleaning, isolation, calibration and reporting around the outage and the site’s SHMS or SSE controls.
Is NDT certification enough to release a repaired structure?
No. NDT verifies the method-specific result. The responsible engineer or site authority still decides whether the repair and asset can return to service.
Do you inspect quarry structures as well as coal mine plant?
Yes. MQSHR 2017 operations are included, with the scope adapted to fixed plant, mobile plant, steelwork and the quarry’s risk management system.
