Cranes, EWPs, telehandlers and lifting gear entering a WA mine need inspection evidence that fits both the applicable Australian Standard and the mine’s safety management system. Annual and major inspection status, defects, log books and site acceptance records must agree before the asset is put to work.
We inspect lifting and access assets across WA, including mobile cranes, vehicle loading cranes, EWPs, telehandlers, forklifts and below-the-hook gear. The scope distinguishes statutory plant registration from the mine’s own equipment acceptance and lifting management requirements.
Western Australia requirements
- Regulator
- DMIRS Resources Safety is the mining regulator. WorkSafe WA administers general plant, high-risk work and workplace safety requirements outside the mining-specific pathway.
- Mining regulations
- WA WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022 and the mine’s safety management system govern how lifting equipment is selected, inspected, maintained and used at a mine. AS 2550, AS 1418, AS 2359 and the relevant lifting gear standards set the technical inspection basis.
- Registration and notification
- Design registration and item registration apply to prescribed plant, including relevant cranes, boom-type EWPs and vehicle loading cranes. Registration is separate from WA mine acceptance, high-risk work licensing and the site lifting register; each record is checked for the asset category.
- Mobilisation
- Remote WA crane and EWP inspections are planned around site access, isolation, boom or platform positioning, load-test requirements and lifting gear presentation. Ten-year major inspection work is scoped before travel so strip-down, NDT and engineering evidence are available when required.
State-specific inspection focus
- WA mine lifting system
- The inspection record is aligned with the mine’s lifting management plan, asset register, log book and defect release process.
- Registered plant check
- Design and item registration status is checked for prescribed cranes, EWPs and vehicle loading cranes without confusing registration with an inspection certificate.
- Major inspection readiness
- Ten-year crane, EWP and telehandler scopes include access, strip-down, NDT and engineering review requirements before the visit is confirmed.
- Lifting gear register
- Slings, shackles, hooks, lifting beams and spreader bars are identified, examined and recorded against their applicable standard and discard criteria.

Inspection checkpoints
- The asset’s WA registration, log book, lifting register and mine acceptance records are reconciled before inspection.
- Safety devices, hooks, wire rope, structure, load charts, limit systems and operator controls are examined against the relevant AS 2550 or AS 1418 part.
- Major inspection scope, NDT and any load test are agreed before remote mobilisation.
- The certificate and defect record state whether the asset is fit for continued use, subject to rectification, or held from service.
Frequently asked questions
Is a WA crane registration the same as an annual inspection certificate?
No. Registration is a statutory plant record for prescribed equipment; the annual or major inspection is evidence of the asset’s condition at the inspection date. A mine may also require separate site acceptance records.
Do you inspect lifting gear as well as cranes in WA?
Yes. Slings, shackles, hooks, lifting beams and spreader bars can be examined and entered into the site lifting gear register as part of the agreed scope.
Can you carry out a ten-year major inspection at a remote WA site?
Yes, subject to confirming the equipment, access, isolation, strip-down, NDT and any load-test requirements before mobilisation.
